Circular Biosciences addresses the limited biodegradability of Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) by using engineered protease enzymes for enzymatic depolymerization at ambient temperatures. The company aims to develop enzymes that withstand high temperatures and can be integrated into PLLA during extrusion, enhancing biodegradation in landfills, home composting, or natural environments. This approach mitigates PLLA’s environmental risks, as it is often not recycled and ends up in landfills. Circular Biosciences is part of the 2024 Innovations Crossroads cohort.
